Smith Bonds with Commits

Brookfield (Wis.) East receiver Brian Smith

While this past recruiting weekend was primary reserved for committed Wisconsin recruits, Brookfield (Wis.) East senior receiver Brian Smith joined the group, and got a glimpse of what Wisconsin's opportunity is presenting him.

MADISON - The Wisconsin 2013 class already has two receivers in the mix with Walnut Ridge (OH.) High's Rob Wheelwright and Kenosha (WI) Tremper High's Jazz Peavy. Now the Badgers are looking to build depth to their roster and had a very familiar face in town with Brookfield (WI.) East High senior wide receiver Brian Smith.

Smith made a strong relationship with the last staff under Bret Bielema but had some unanswered questions once he bolted to Arkansas. However, he got those answers on his official visit this past weekend and where he stands with the Badgers.

"It was awesome," Smith told Badger Nation. "I had a great time with the commits, players and all the coaches during my official visit. I talked to Receivers Coach Zach Azzanni a lot over the weekend and he told me that they're out of scholarships at receiver. Otherwise I'd probably have one, but they were really welcoming and seems like they would love to have me there.

"I've had a preferred walk-on spot there for a while now and I really love it up there, so we'll see how the rest of the process goes for me."

The 6-4, 195-pound Smith was surrounded by plenty of Wisconsin pledges and the vibe that he got from the group was pretty strong, even though he sees the coaching situation as still being up in the air.

"All the guys were great and it seems like nobody's going anywhere," said Smith. "Everything about the visit was great. If I had to pick one thing it was probably just spending the time with the players and commits, because those are the guys I would be around the most. The coaches didn't talk about their futures really, but everyone knows there's no certainty in them being there next year."

Smith has been on multiple schools radars, as he is weighing a preferred walk-on spot to Minnesota as well as talking to Northern Illinois and a couple Division II schools.

"As of right now, I don't have a decision date set in mind," said Smith. "I do want to say that I loved Wisconsin."
