The 31st annual boys Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-Star games are scheduled at the UW Fieldhouse on June 21.
Thirty-one athletes who received Associated Press all-state recognition are scheduled to
compete in the four divisional contests that feature seniors in North vs. South confrontations.
Here is a rundown of some of the players and things to look for:
Division 1
This marquee matchup appears to favor the South, which includes DeMarcus Phillips of Milwaukee Washington. However, the team recently lost Michigan State recruit Kory Lucious of Milwaukee Pius.
Phillips averaged 21.9 points and five rebounds per game in leading the Purgolders to a 20-0 regular-season, earning the WBCA’s Mr. Basketball award. Lucious joined Phillips on the AP’s first team after averaging 21.6 ppg.
Their teammates include third-team all-staters Cory Degner of Brookfield Central and Stephen Jaskulske of Racine Case and honorable mention choices Chris McHenry of Bradley Tech, Jake Barnett of state champion Wauwatosa East and Jordan Brezinski of Muskego.
The 6-foot-7-inch Jaskulske registered 18.1 points, 14 rebounds and nearly three blocked shots per outing, while Degner averaged 17.6 ppg.
Alex Welhouse of Kaukauna and Jake Gollon of Stevens Point were named third- and fourth-team all-staters, respectively, and lead the North squad. Welhouse topped the Fox Valley Association with a 21.7 average, converting 91.2 percent from the line and 51.9 percent from the floor. Gollon topped the Wisconsin Valley Conference at 22.6 ppg for the league champs.
Honorable mention selections Dylan Pedretti of La Crosse Logan, Eddie Gilgenbach of Fond du Lac (18.1 ppg), Jacob Koch of Ashwaubenon, Matt Coenen of Appleton East and T.J. Kellner of Sheboygan North will be other key contributors, as will Madison West’s Corvonn Gaines, who averaged 16.9 points and 6.7 assists.
Division 2
This showdown kicks off the day as the South unit will rely on second-teamer Mike Hojnacki of New Berlin Eisenhower, who’ll play at Michigan Tech, and third-team pick Ben Wisniewski of rival New Berlin West.
Hojnacki averaged 19.2 points and 8.2 rebounds for the state title-winning Lions and will be joined by teammate Tristan Toban. Wisniewski averaged 20.8 points for the Vikings.
Other top South performers include honorable mention choices Austin Kearns of Slinger and Tom Neary of Catholic Memorial and East Troy teammates Kyle Jones and Alex Bondar.
The North features five honorable mention all-staters: Andrew Lochman of Rice Lake, Aris Wurtz and Ryan Rasmussen of Waupun, Logan Dellger of Plymouth and Taylor Garceau of Marinette.
Wurtz finished his career with 1,194 points after averaging 18.2 last year along with seven rebounds per contest.
Division 3
Honorable mention players Ben Pickel of Cuba City and Jordan Rumpel of Arcadia lead the South’s contingent that also features Oostburg teammates Justin Wilterdink and Matt Paluchniak, Quentin Tranberg of Iowa-Grant, Mitchell Erickson of Darlington and Luke Standiford of Pardeeville.
Pickel averaged 18 points and nearly six rebounds per game, Tranberg finished with 19.3 and 9.7, Erickson averaged 14.3 ppg and Standiford, a Southern Illinois football recruit, turned in 17 and 8.8 finishes. Jake Wiederholt of Fennimore chipped in 14.6 ppg.
The North won’t have third-team all-state selection Mike Griffin of Iola-Scandinavia, but honorable mention pick Kieran Weed of Laconia leads the contingent. The squad also features Manitowoc Roncalli mates Cody Lassila and Mark Schrimpf.
Division 4
The loaded South squad includes second-team all-state performer Lance Rongstad and honorable mention pick and Eleva-Strum teammate Jordan Peterson, fourth-teamer Christian Wolf of Kohler and honorable mention choice Joey Hartwig of Black Hawk.
Hartwig averaged 14.8 points and 10.2 rebounds. Other top players include Randolph’s Bryan Johnson, who averaged 17 ppg and finished his prep career with 1,260 points and will head to UW-Oshkosh.
The North team features all-state honorable mention selection Josh Regal of Suring and Thorp teammates Eric Strzok and Scott Horn.
