Wisconsin’s best prep baseball players are gathering for the 25th annual Wisconsin Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Classic.
The round-robin competitions feature four teams—North, South, East and West—battling it out at E.J. Schneider Field in Oshkosh.
Nearly 30 of the participants have received WBCA all-state recognition during the past two seasons.
The East squad features five such players, including Brock Guetzke of Hartford and Jared Andreoli of Union Grove. Guetzke was a first-team infielder this year after being a second-team utility performer in 2007. Andreoli made the second-team outfield this spring after being an honorable mention pick a year ago.
Nick Lingvay of Kenosha Tremper is a second-team infielder this season, Sam Keller of Milwaukee Riverside is a third-team infielder and Blake Pindyck of University School is an honorable mention outfielder.
The North roster includes Justin Jirschele of Clintonville, Cole Brocker of Kimberly and Bryan Clark of host school Oshkosh North. Jirschele and Brocker made this year’s second team as an infielder and outfielder, respectively, while Clark was an honorable mention catcher in ’07.
The South contingent includes eight players who have earned WBCA laurels, including two who were honored both seasons: Jay Fanta of Viroqua was a second-team infielder last year and made the first team this spring, while Tyler DeBoer of Waupun was a third-team pitcher in 2007 and made the second team as a utility player this time.
Prairie du Chien’s Kyle Sime is a first-team catcher and Janesville Craig’s Ben Yaucher is one of the first-team outfielders for 2008, while Trevin Szulczewski of Nekoosa is an honorable mention pick at catcher and Madison Memorial’s Spencer Lorrig is a third-team infielder. The list also includes 2007 honorable mention infielders Ryan Mielke of Waunakee and Markus Singh of Green Lake.
The West team outshines them all with 12 such honored participants, including seven who made the list both seasons.
Cody Koback of Stevens Point is the only first-team repeater, making it as an outfielder. Donald Hagedorn of Wausau East was an honorable mention utility player and this year was a third-team catcher; Brad Hallberg of Barron was a third-teamer both years, first as a utility guy and then as an infielder; Austin Lubinsky of La Crosse Logan was an honorable mention selection and then second-team pitcher; Zach Rickaway of La Crosse Aquinas was honorable mention infielder and a third-team pitcher; Jon Schoch of Chippewa falls McDonnell was honorable mention and then second team as an outfielder; and Ben Sebesta of Eau Claire Memorial did the same as an infielder.
The others include five 2008 honorees: Alex Grunenwald of Merrill, second-team infielder; Ben Kincaid of Eau Claire Memorial, second-team pitcher; Jake Long of Wisconsin Rapids, first-team infielder; Tony Mueller of La Crosse Central, first-team utility; and Mark Shaver of St. Croix Central, honorable mention pitcher.
