UW-La Crosse and UW-Platteville runners sweep weekly honors in cross country after big meet in Iowa, while former Oregon High School standout Amanda Prawat of UW-Stevens Point was honored again in soccer.

Men’s cross country

Junior Connor Lonning, a local product from Aquinas High School, helped UW-La Crosse earn the team title of the Dan Huston Invite in Waverly, Iowa. Lonning clocked a 25:36 to capture fifth place among 214 competitors who covered the 8,000-meter course.

Other nominees for the weekly honor included UW-Oshkosh sophomore Jake Keehan of Green Bay East, UW-Platteville sophomore Patrick Klein of Monroe, UW-Superior sophomore Seth Neumann of Eagle River and UW-Stevens Point junior Adam Steinke of Marshfield.

Women’s cross country

Senior Jessica Scott of Kiel led UW-Platteville participants at the Dan Huston Invite, covering the 6,000-meter layout in 22:16, which placed her third overall and second among collegiate competitors.

The other league nominees included UW-La Crosse senior Megan Johnson of River Falls, UW-Stevens Point freshman Claire Roberts of Oakfield and UW-Superior senior and former local prep standout Katee Rosburg.

Football

Somerset junior tight end Brett Schreiner of UW-Eau Claire won offensive player honors after hauling in 10 balls for 129 yards and two touchdowns during the Blugolds’ 35-21 triumph against UW-La Crosse.

Other candidates for the honor were UW-Whitewater senior tight end Nick Slupski of Greenfield, UW-River Falls sophomore wide receiver Michael Zweifel of Whitewater, UW-La Crosse sophomore receiver Travis Bordeau of Menasha and UW-Oshkosh sophomore quarterback Craig McClelland of Union Grove.

Defensive recognition went to the Titans’ Kevin Bahl, a junior linebacker from West Allis Hale. Bahl registered a game-high 11 total tackles and recovered a fumble in a 9-7 victory over UW-Stout.

Other contenders featured Milwaukee Bay View junior defensive back Quincy Hudson of UW-Platteville and Chetek senior back Tyler Florczak of UW-Stevens Point.

UW-Stevens Point senior punter Luke Frisch of Nekoosa garnered special teams laurels after averaging 39.5 yards on his six boots. His long went for 50 yards, and he pinned the Pioneers inside their 20-yard line twice during the Pointers’ 3-0 triumph.

Nominees included UW-Eau Claire junior wide receiver Nils Dilon of Iola-Scandinavia, UW-La Crosse senior tailback Eric Donoval of Sheboygan South, UW-Oshkosh freshman punter Kyle Calhoun of Kettle Moraine, UW-River Falls senior kicker Jesse Finer of Green Bay East, UW-Stout junior kicker-punter Kyle Martin of Kettle Moraine and UW-Whitewater junior defensive back Derek Underwood of Milton.

Women’s soccer

UW-Stevens Point senior forward Amanda Prawat of Oregon won weekly honors again after scoring two goals to lead the Pointers to two victories, including the game-winner (1-0) at third-ranked UW-Eau Claire, a win that pushed the victors into sole possession of the WIAC lead.

UW-La Crosse senior midfielder Erin Wilson of Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln, UW-Platteville sophomore midfielder Meghan McGivern of Palmyra-Eagle and UW-Whitewater senior forward Mary Donohoo of Wauwatosa West also were among the nominees.

The defensive honor went to UW-Platteville sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Krier of Port Washington, who led the Pioneers to a 3-0 win over Coe College (Iowa) and a scoreless tie against St. Ambrose (Iowa).

Other candidates featured UW-La Crosse senior defender Sara McClellan of Appleton East.

Women’s tennis

UW-Eau Claire junior Erin Welch of Tomah, UW-La Crosse junior Carlie Bohrman of Oconomowoc and UW-Oshkosh freshman Emily Bostwick of Whitefish Bay were among those nominated for the weekly award in singles.

Madison Memorial freshman Kalla Schaefer teamed up with UW-Whitewater sophomore Amy Siemon, who won the singles honor, to earn the doubles honor after they finished 4-0 during the week to improve to 13-3 overall.

Among the other duos to be nominated include UW-Eau Claire juniors Brenna McCormick of Greendale and Erin Welch of Tomah, UW-La Crosse freshmen Megan Fallon of Neenah and Kelly Kuether of Brookfield East and UW-Oshkosh freshmen Liz Leffler of The Prairie School and Kristina Naidicz of Kenosha Tremper.

Volleyball

Watertown sophomore libero Christina Cahoon of UW-Oshkosh was honored after helping the Titans finish 5-0, including a four-match sweep of their invitational. Cahoon recorded 33 digs in a league win against UW-La Crosse and then accumulated 66 digs in the tournament, including 24 against UW-Superior, as UW-Oshkosh improved to 25-2 overall.

Other nominees included UW-La Crosse junior right-side hitter Brianne Stankus of Burlington, UW-Platteville junior outside hitter-middle blocker Steph Tronnes of Edgerton, UW-Stout sophomore outside hitter Steph Nichols of Greendale and UW-Whitewater sophomore right-side hitter Caitlin Hogan of New London.
