The South rose again and again in the 31st annual Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association boys All-Star games Saturday at the UW Field House, sweeping all four contests between graduated seniors. Meanwhile, the teams split, 2-2, in the 26th annual girls competitions, which were played at Madison Area Technical College.
Division 1 boys
The South won going away, 91-58, as four players reached double figures. Milwaukee Washington’s DeMarcus Phillips led the way with 15 points and chipped in 13 rebounds. Chris McHenry of Bradley Tech added 14 points, Stephen Jaskulske of Racine Case registered 12 and Rick Bowers of Germantown recorded 11.
Madison West’s Corvonn Gaines led the North, which took a 17-12 advantage after the first quarter, with 12 points, the only one to reach double figures.
Division 2 boys
Michael Hojnacki of New Berlin Eisenhower registered 14 points, 10 in the second half, as the South held on for a 71-61 triumph.
The South was outscored in every period but the second, where it dominated by a 31-13 margin.
Brown Deer’s Kevin Wild topped the South with 15 points and Catholic Memorial’s Dayton Young added 10.
Brett Anderson of New Richmond and Logan Dellger of Plymouth shared team honors for the North with 10 points.
Division 3 boys
Jake Wiederholt of Fennimore scored 16 points, including a three-point play that put his team ahead for good in the second quarter, as the South held on to claim a 78-74 victory despite missing 21 of 37 from the charity stripe.
Mitchell Erickson of Darlington added 12 points, while Quentin Tranberg of Iowa-Grant hauled down eight rebounds and scored 10 points, including a dunk in the second period and six free throws during the last three minutes.
Those efforts offset a game-high 21 points from the North’s Kieran Weed of Laconia. Mitchell Schneider of St. Mary’s Springs added 12 points.
Division 4 boys
Rio’s Jeremy Reierson scored 20 points, making all 10 field-goal attempts, to share game honors with teammate Lance Rongstad of Eleva-Strum as the South dominated the final three quarters in claiming a 94-76 verdict.
Bryan Johnson of Randolph added 15 points and Christian Wolf of Kohler contributed 10.
The North finished with four players in double digits: Thorp’s Eric Strzok with 14, Elcho’s Kurt Kincaid with 13, Suring’s Josh Regal with 12 and Bowler’s Derrick Nillessen with 11.
Division 1 girls
Hannah Quilling of Eau Claire North, a UW-Green Bay recruit, scored a game-high 20 points in leading the North to an 81-64 victory.
The North used a 21-3 burst in the second half to take control, offsetting the three-point shooting of Muskego’s Jenna Endisch, who nailed six from beyond the arc for a team-high 19 points.
Ally Flannery of Antigo added 12 points and Amy Selk of Sheboygan South 10 for the North, while Janelle Adams of Milwaukee King scored 13 for the South.
Division 2 girls
Miss Basketball Rachael Hencke of Grafton scored 12 points, including the game-winning layup with 34 seconds remaining, to help the South post a 77-76 victory.
Slinger’s Sierra West equaled Hencke’s output, while Richland Center’s Becca Campbell added 11 points for the victors.
Meanwhile, Brynn Larsen of Oconto Falls led the North with 15, but she received plenty of help as Freedom’s Stacie Van Handel and Rice Lake’s Casey Weber chipped in 12 and 11, respectively.
Division 3 girls
Cuba City’s Brianna Kaiser scored 15 points, Erica Babinec of Onalaska Luther finished with 13 and Jadee Rooney of Markesan added 10 in carrying the South to a 72-60 triumph.
Holly Mertens of Stanley-Boyd led the North with 14.
Division 4 girls
Becca Paulson of Clayton nailed seven three-pointers and scored 23 points, but she wasn’t alone as Val Schuster of Wausau Newman pumped in 21 points as the North raced to a 95-64 win.
Whitney Verdegan of state champion Flambeau added 16 and Melissa Michalkiewicz of St. Mary’s Central had 12 for the North, while Randolph’s Brianna Roberts and Rio’s Kerry McDermott topped the South with 12 apiece. Carissa Wiersma of Cambria-Friesland added 10.
