Week 2 Highlights: Running to Daylight

Jared Stan threw three touchdown passes, rushed for a score and booted a field goal and four extra points in directing Lake Geneva Badger to a 37-7 win over East Troy. His was just one of dozens of topnotch performances in week two of the Wisconsin high school football season.

All legs and toes

Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah’s Alex Brown ran circles around Fall River’s defense, and when he was done he gave them the boot. Brown rushed for only five times but gained a whopping 174 yards, including scoring runs of 66, 35, 13 and 45 yards, in a 56-6 blowout against Fall River. Brown added eight PATs to finish with 32 points.

Putting the hammer down

Devin Kellenberger shredded the Watertown Luther Prep defense for 304 yards rushing on only 17 carries and recorded five touchdowns, including a 76-yarder in the opening quarter, as Beaver Dam earned a 38-20 win.

Quite the thief

Brandon Gries didn’t get going offensively, throwing two interceptions, but his defense made up for it as he picked off three Howards Grove passes, including a clincher with 1:33 left, to secure Kiel’s 14-10 victory. Gries registered nine tackles and set up the visitors’ second touchdown by setting them up at the 9-yard line with his second theft.

He knows where the end zone is

Luke Menzel scored five touchdowns, all on runs of 17 yards or less, and finished with 106 yards rushing in helping backfield mate Matt TeBeest (135 yards) and Oostburg to a 44-7 win over Martin Luther.

Explosive one-two punch

Zach Pomputis gashed Wausau Newman Catholic with 236 yards on 27 carries, four of them for touchdowns. He added a two-point conversion, and backfield mate David Simenson registered three two-pointers and gained 151 yards on 19 attempts as Owen-Withee romped to a 44-20 victory.

Mr. Robinson’s neighborhood

Kerry Robinson pounded Oshkosh Lourdes for 258 yards on 22 attempts in leading Shoreland Lutheran to a 35-27 victory. Ricky Brereton chipped in 24 carries for 103 yards.

It was a Wynn-win situation

Daryl Wynn toted the pigskin 20 times for 292 yards and scored four times in leading Milwaukee Bay View past Milwaukee Pius, 33-13.

Ground attack beats air arsenal

Daniel Ricci exploded for 215 yards on 16 carries, taking three of them to the end zone, while Peter Steigerwald added 105 yards and three more TDs in leading Brookfield Academy to a 52-18 win over Williams Bay.

That offset the performance of Jack Slovick, who caught seven balls for 180 yards and three touchdowns for the Bulldogs.

Five times is the charm

Racine Lutheran received five touchdowns and 19 carries for 177 yards from Eric Oertel.

Treasure chest of Pirates’ backs

Pewaukee ripped Nicolet, 55-21, behind a three-headed backfield attack of ken Mischker (148 yards), A.J. Coley (103) and Derek Watt (102).

Golden Eagles put up big numbers

Quarterback Joe Carl rushed for 150 yards and scored on runs of 13, 1 and 14 yards and added 79 yards passing to lead Fennimore to a wild 40-30 victory over Lancaster.

Battle of attrition

Karl Huemmer carried 28 times for 239 yards and all three touchdowns, including a 55-yard score, in leading Sun Prairie to a 21-14 victory over Middleton in a battle between last year’s conference co-champions.

Double-pronged attack

Quarterback Jordan Stephans passed for the first score and added 34-, 13- and 20-yard touchdown runs in carrying Hartford to a 40-7 trouncing of beat-up Germantown.

Getting his act together

Deon McClain overcame an early fumble to blitz Franklin for 245 yards rushing, including TD jaunts of 64 and 79 yards, in helping Racine Park to a 27-7 triumph and 2-0 start.

Big returns both ways

Dan Sailer of Eau Claire Regis set up his team’s first score with a 50-yard interception return and led the Ramblers with 78 yards rushing in their 13-7 victory against Altoona, which improved Regis to 2-0 in Cloverbelt Conference action.

Tide rolls behind passing attack

Edgerton romped past Platteville behind quarterback Bryan Gregory’s four scoring tosses on 16 of 26 attempts for 196 yards. His first two TDs went to Kyle Stearns.

Big day in losing effort

Dan Vyvyan carried 23 times for 182 yards, scoring on 30-, 74- and 3-yard runs and bolted 81 yards with a kickoff return, but it wasn’t enough as Union Grove suffered a 34-33 overtime setback against Evansville as quarterback Andrew Kiester scored on a 1-yard run and passed to Eric Nieman for the deciding two-point conversion.

Offense and special teams

La Crosse Central standout Garret Schultz ripped the Eau Claire North defense for 138 yards on only 11 carries, including touchdown runs of 11 and 52 yards. He shredded North’s special teams unit, too, bolting to a 95-yard score with the second-half kickoff in ignited a 41-20 Central victory. Victor Mirasola chipped in a 90-yard TD burst.

Winning combination

Jared Stan threw three touchdown passes, rushed for a score and booted a field goal and four extra points in directing Lake Geneva Badger to a 37-7 win over East Troy. Two of Stan’s TD tosses went to Justin Bowers (65 and 33 yards), who rushed for a 46-yard score.

Big arm and big foot

Justin Sinz completed 7 of 14 pass attempts for 160 yards and three touchdowns to lead Edgar’s 39-0 triumph over Cadott. Sinz also booted a 28-yard field goal.

He’s the Bosshart; Pax the man

Tony Bosshart scored his team’s first TD in the second quarter. He then went 4 yards for another score with 10 seconds remaining and added the two-point conversion to carry Spring Valley to a thrilling 15-14 victory over Elmwood. Bosshart finished with 93 yards on 31 attempts.

Meanwhile, Steve Pax led the Raiders, also 1-1, with 26 carries for 177 yards and both touchdowns, 60- and 12-yard scampers.

Big plays, big results

Nick Schuepbach scored on jaunts of 30 and 49 yards to finish with 192 yards on just 10 carries in helping McFarland paste Lakeside Lutheran, 52-14.

Too much Wara

Nate Wara passed for 203 yards, including scores of 30 and 45 yards, and added 65 yards rushing that featured TD runs of 20 and 38 yards as Oshkosh North defeated Menasha, 30-14.

Scoring in many ways

Joey Bertram dominated the fourth quarter, securing Fond du Lac’s 35-0 victory over Neenah with three scores: 35-yard run, 42-yard interception return and 38-yard fumble return.

Dangerous combination

Dylan Wodsedalek and Ken Wallender hooked up seven times for 194 yards, including four touchdown plays, in North Fond du Lac’s 48-13 triumph over Ozaukee. Wallender added an 82-yard kickoff return for another score and intercepted two passes.

Keys to victory

Austin Keys caught two passes and both went for scores in helping Mondovi defeat Durand, 18-7. Keys hauled in 60- and 23-yard tosses.

One-two punch

Jordan Koehler rambled for 191 yards rushing on 29 tries, while Trevor Morning scored three times—runs of 3 and 46 yards and a pass reception of 45 yards—as Bloomer downed Mosinee, 32-20.

Big second half does trick

Nate Martin and Amherst bounced back from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit to post a 26-14 victory over Wild Rose. Martin connected with Scott Borgen on three touchdown passes and scored once on a run to finish with 217 yards through the air and 111 on the ground.

Big numbers in losing cause

Brett Strahota was forced to pass, and he did it well. The Markesan QB three for 367 yards and five touchdowns, but he and his team came up short, 54-41, to Tri-County.

Merrill unleashes Malzahn

Dalton Malzahn rushed for 242 yards on 32 carries and scored once as Merrill pulled out a 21-20 win over Wisconsin Rapids.

Blume does it all

Marathon’s Bob Blume rushed for a score, caught a TD pass and two-point conversion, and set up another score with a 43-yard punt return in a 54-7 victory against Park Falls.

Piling up impressive numbers

Jayden Hoppe sliced up the West Allis Central defense for 215 yards on only 11 carries, take five of them to the house, including runs of 53, 27 and 80 yards in Waterford’s 61-34 victory.

Whitehall lost the Chase

Nekoosa’s Chase Coyer rambled for 206 yards, scoring on dashes of 66, 42 and 22 yards in the visitors’ 29-6 victory at Whitehall.

Running roughshod over opposition

Mike Lindsey scorched Amery for 188 yards and a two-point conversion, while Ryan Miesbauer added 138 yards and scored all five of Northwestern’s touchdowns as the Tigers roared to a 40-9 triumph.

Leading an aerial assault

John Parent completed 21 of 36 attempts for 349 yards and one touchdown, a 68-yarder to Simon Rabas, in Sturgeon Bay’s 27-14 decision over Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

Double dose of the Guzas

Marty Guza scored two touchdowns and finished with 24 carries for 195 yards, while Ryan Guza threw a 5-yard scoring pass to lead Independence-Gilmanton to an 18-13 win over Elk Mound.

Quite an air show

Pepin rolled to a 41-8 decision over Alma behind Joe Marcks’ four scoring aerials. Although Marcks completed only six attempts, Travis Heit reached the end zone twice and Jordan Haake and Nathan Stein once apiece on the receiving end. Stein also scored twice via the running game.

Too much of Wayne’s world

Tim Wayne bolted 47 yards for a TD in the third quarter and scored from 9 yards out in the fourth in helping Plum City put away Boyceville, 26-0. Wayne finished with 165 yards rushing.

Backfield of Bulldogs

Kyle Hetke gained 175 yards rushing and scored twice while Jake Frazier added 155 yards and reached the end zone three times as Chetek buried Unity, 40-0.

Ladysmith gets quite an Effertz

Joel Effertz caught three passes for 98 yards, all touchdowns, and all from Eric Effertz as the Lumberjacks downed Tomahawk, 25-14.

Felske flies for Flambeau

Levi Felske blazed for 230 yards on 35 attempts, taking two of those carries 62 and 55 yards to paydirt, in leading Flambeau past Frederic, 33-20, as the Falcons battered the Vikings for 391 yards rushing.

Getting behind the secondary

Menomonie receiver Levi Kraft caught only two passes but they went for 121 yards. He and Nick Jacobson hooked up on a 61-yard play to set up a touchdown and then connected for a 60-yard score in the Indians’ 22-12 verdict over Wausau West.

Knoll shines both ways

Josh Knoll caught scoring passes of 80 and 63 yards from Jordan Jandt and intercepted two passes as Sparta overcame Wausau East, 27-16, on the road.

More than enough from Bellmore

Beau Bellmore ripped off a 26-yard run to open the scoring, rushed for 114 yards on 14 carries in the first half and finished with 195 yards and three touchdowns in leading West De Pere to a convincing 41-6 triumph over Seymour as the Phantoms won their second straight Bay Conference contest to start the season.

Hornets sting early, often

Quarterback Steve VandenAvond capped first-quarter drives with 25- and 31-yard TD scampers and finished the scoring with a 3-yarder as Green Bay Preble stayed unbeaten with a 35-14 win over Bay Port. VandenAvond finished with 88 yards rushing and completed 7 of 8 passing for 70 yards.

Redbirds fly to second straight win

Quarterback Brent Jorgensen scored two 1-yard TD runs, but his arm made the difference as he completed 17 of 26 attempts for 298 yards and two scores as De Pere held off Green Bay Southwest, 36-28. Andy Kros (106) and Brandon Pritzl (104) each broke the century mark on four receptions each.

Meanwhile, Travis Bastien ripped De Pere’s defense for 304 yards on 33 carries for the still winless Trojans.

Going the distance not enough

Pulaski quarterback Max Noeldner ran just six times but he gained 153 yards, scoring on plays of 99 and 11 yards, but the Red Raiders till lost, 20-13 to Manitowoc.

On the mark when it counts

Jacob Ristow completed four passes, and they went for touchdowns of 15, 16, 41 and 25 yards—two of them to Curtis Wilson—as Sheboygan South whipped Green Bay West, 31-10.

Doing it all

Zach Edwards finished off a 30-yard pass reception for the winning touchdown with 1:58 remaining to give Marinette a 24-20 victory over Shawano. That was after Edwards accumulated 193 yards rushing and two TDs.

Off and running

Ryan LaMarre ripped off a 60-yard touchdown run and finished with 187 yards on 19 tries and scored twice in helping Suring to a 42-22 victory over Crandon.

Woldt the difference in wild one

Brandon Woldt rushed for 208 yards and two scores and added a TD reception as Bonduel downed Peshtigo, 48-35.

Ruechel shows all of his talents

Ben Ruechel rushed for 82 yards and three short scores and passed for 201 yards with 11 completions in 12 attempts in carrying Oconto to a 43-12 win over Coleman.

Florence goes to Church

Jake Church opened the scoring on a 7-yard run and capped it with a 66-yard burst to finish with 189 yards in the Bobcats’ 28-6 victory over Crivitz.
