They’ve taken the first step, and Tuesday’s next one will be even bigger as girls golfers participate in sectional competitions Tuesday.
The top 12 teams in Division 1, two from each sectional tournament, will qualify for the WIAA state meet at Madison’s University Ridge, which takes place Oct. 13-14. The same goes for the top two teams in each of the three Division 2 sectionals.
Green Bay Notre Dame is the two-time defending trophy winner in D-1 and hosts a sectional after recording the third-best team score (338) in regional action. Kettle Moraine (324) and Brookfield Central (333) registered the top scores in winning titles last week, and the Lasers and Lancers are favorites to win sectional crowns.
Meanwhile, Madison Edgewood is chasing its eighth consecutive state championships and scored a 339 to win a regional title. That was the second-best finish after Fox Valley Lutheran’s 336.
Osceola and returning state player of the year Lindsay Danielson must be reckoned with, too.
Division 1
Eau Claire North Regional
Hudson won the title with a 347 total, while Eau Claire Memorial (365), River Falls (366) and the host Huskies (379) advanced to the Hayward Sectional on Tuesday.
Hudson Katie Ecker shot a 75 (41-34) for medalist honors, while North senior Casi Webb and New Richmond junior Jessica Williams tied for second with 81s.
Tomah Regional
Holmen won the crown with a 357 total behind senior Christina DeBoer’s 81. Onalaska was second at 371 and Wisconsin Rapids (392) also advanced to the Hayward Sectional. La Crosse Central/Logan won a playoff with Stevens Point for the fourth spot after both teams finished at 396.
Sophomore Alli Plath of Onalaska won individual honors with a 79, while Marshfield junior Cassandra Marschall tied DeBoer for second.
Marinette Regional
Defending state champion Green Bay Notre Dame registered a 338 to win the championship by 14 strokes over the host Marines. Green Bay Preble (367) and Bay Port (377) also qualified for the Notre Dame Sectional.
Marinette’s Allie Parthie carded a 75 (36-39) to top fellow senior Erin Sharpee of Notre Dame, who shot a 79 (38-41). Tritons’ junior Jennifer Konop was third with an 81.
Seymour Regional
Sheboygan North/South edged Kaukauna by three shots to win the team title with a 355 score. De Pere was third at 374 and the host school fired a 390.
De Pere senior Jenna Pfeffer’s 77 (40-37) was good enough to win individual honors, while Kaukauna junior Sarah Wittmann was second at 79 (42-37).
Arrowhead Regional
Homestead (357) outlasted the Warhawks by seven strokes to win the Arrowhead Regional, with Hamilton (402) and Hartford (405) also advanced to the Hartford Sectional.
Arrowhead junior Ericka Pfaender finished first with an 81, while Homestead seniors Sarah Gradecki (83) and Nicole Westcott (85) were next.
Oshkosh North Regional
Neenah recorded a 350 to win team honors, while Appleton West (362) and Oshkosh West (380) advanced and the host Spartans squeezed into the Hartford Sectional by a shot at 406.
Neenah junior Emma Wilson fired a 44 and 37 for an 81 to claim medalist honors, while the Appleton West tandem of sophomore A.J. Selig (84) and junior Lauren Felton (86) rounded out the top three.
Beaver Dam Regional
Madison East ran away with the title with a 380. Oconomowoc (401), Monona Grove (410) and McFarland (415) also reached the Madison East Sectional.
East sophomore Alex Douglas and Madison La Follette junior McKenna Prestigacomo tied for the top spot with 83s.
Middleton Regional
Waunakee won a tight four-team race with a 350, while Oregon (355), Madison West (362) and the host Cardinals (365) also advanced to the Madison East Sectional.
Juniors Monica Enderlin of Middleton and Abby Busler of Oregon shared medalist honors with 79s, two shots better than Waunakee sophomore Lizi Brooks.
Milton Regional
Milton won its own tourney with a 364, outdistancing Janesville Parker (385), Janesville Craig (400) and Elkhorn (403).
Milton sophomores Ashton Stair and Karlee McCue tied for individual honors with 87s, two strokes ahead of Elkhorn senior Brianna Entwistle.
Mukwonago Regional
Kettle Moraine blitzed the field with a weekend low score of 324, 30 shots in front of Catholic Memorial. Waukesha South/North/West was third at 359 and Burlington’s 418 gave it the final spot for the Janesville Parker Sectional.
Kettle Moraine grabbed the top two spots behind junior April Ohlendorf’s 73 (38-35) and senior Jackie Shepherd’s 75 (38-37), while Waukesha senior Paige Schmidt was third with an 83.
Pius XI Regional
Brookfield Central registered the second-best tourney score with a 333 to win the crown, while Divine Savior Holy Angels (356), Whitefish Bay/Shorewood (366) and the host Popes (377) round out the Kenosha Bradford Sectional qualifiers.
Nicolet senior Tory Bauman fired nines of 36 and 34 for a 70 that easily won medalist honors as Central seniors Kelly Coakley and Chelsey Meloy finished at 79 and 80, respectively.
Racine Park Regional
The title went to Kenosha Bradford, which finished at 370. Racine Park (390), Racine Case (397) and Kenosha Tremper (405).
Bradford senior Gianna Tenuta ran away with the medalist with a 77 (39-38), with senior teammate Kristin Jaskolski next at 90.
Division 2
Luck/Unity Regional
St. Croix Falls ran away with a 379 score to outdistance Baldwin-Woodville’s 397. Osceola (430) and Amery (453) also qualified for the Osceola Sectional.
Osceola senior Lindsay Danielson cruised to the individual top spot, carding a 77 (39-38). Senior Jennifer Benoy (82) and junior Marissa Campeau (88) were next for St. Croix Falls.
Stanley-Boyd Regional
Northwestern won a three-team chase with a 388, three strokes ahead of the host Orioles and six in front of Spooner. Ladysmith advanced with a 421, one shot better than Eau Claire Regis. They will compete in the Osceola Sectional.
Stanley-Boyd senior Stephanie Wirth rallied with a 41 on her back nine after a 47 to win medalist honors with her 88. That was three better than Regis sophomore Lindsey Eisenhuth and six shots ahead of Northwestern junior Taylor Prior and Spooner senior Alyssa Gostonczik.
Prairie du Chien Regional
Madison Edgewood buried the competition, finishing with a 339 score. Darlington/Cuba City was second at 415, followed by Lancaster’s 428 and Wisconsin Dells’ 432, which advanced to the Wisconsin Dells Sectional.
Edgewood senior Alyssa Elliott notched a 76 (39-37) to nip Edgerton junior and fellow returning first-team all-stater Alyssa Ferrell, who had a 78 (38-40). Second-team all-stater Alex Lake of Edgewood, a senior, was third with an 80.
Westby Regional
Osseo-Fairchild had to improve on the back nine and did by 13 shots among its four scorers, which was enough to beat Arcadia/Cochrane-Fountain City by nine strokes with a 388 total after the latter improved by 26 shots on the back nine.
Neillsville (408) and Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau (411) also advanced to the Dells Sectional.
Individually, Arcadia senior Brooke Finner (82) and Osceola-Fairchild sophomore Adie Vold (86) were the only ones to break 90.
St. Thomas More Regional
Racine St. Catherine’s (389) held on to beat Denmark (397) for top honors. The hosts (413) and Lakeside Lutheran (436) also reached the Little Chute Sectional.
Junior Jordyn Wzygowski of The Prairie School earned medalist honors with an 82 (40-42), while Lexy Zimmerman of St. Catherine’s and junior Cassie Kujawa of St. Thomas More tied for second with 87s.
Bonduel Regional
Fox Valley Lutheran pulled away with a 336 finish to outdistance Oconto Falls (355), Appleton Xavier (357) and Freedom (376), which all made the Little Chute Sectional field.
Lutheran senior Alexa Arent won medalist laurels with a 78 (37-41), with Xavier senior Colleen Mares second at 81 and Oconto Falls senior Emily Steffens third at 83.
