Something had to give. Cougar commit Eric Oertel was facing a defense that had allowed just a 3.1 yard apc. Oertel was the leading ground gainer in all of Wisconsin.

In the end, Oertel rushed for 248 yards but Racine Lutheran couldn't hold off defending WIAA Division 7 state champion Catholic Central in a 42-35 defeat in the conference championship game.

Oertel's night mirrored that of his team. He stomped off 225 of his ground yards in the first half as Racine Lutheran built a 35-13 lead. But Oertel missed several minutes in the second half with leg cramps -- and the missed defensive series loomed just as large as his absence on offense as CC staged a furious comeback. CC then took the lead for good with 5:59 remaining in the game against a tired Racine Lutheran defense.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, Oertel had this to say in the Journal Times... "That was the greatest football team I ever played against," said Oertel. "They're well coached and they're the most fundamentally sound team I've probably ever seen play."

Oertel will come to WSU as an ATH, and his best position at the Pac-10 level might be found at linebacker.

Biography:
Through eight games in '09 was the state of Wisconsin's leading rusher with 1,920 yards on the ground with 20 TD's. Also had 80 tackles (48 solo) at linebacker.
